HYPOSPADIAS REPAIR
OVERVIEW
Hypospadias is a birth defect that affects the structure of the penis. When a baby is born with the condition, their urethra typically ends on the underside of the penis, rather than at the top end. In most cases, Dr Singh will recommend surgery to repair the defect when the baby is between six months and two years old.
This surgery is done on most boys who were born with this problem as hypospadias is a most common defect in boys. If Hypospadias Repair surgery is not done, the following problems may occur:
- Directing urine and difficulty in controlling the urine stream
- There may be a curve in the penis during erection
- Decrease fertility
Hypospadias repair is done under general anesthesia so that your baby doesn’t feel anything during the procedure. During hypospadias repair surgery, Dr Singh will create a tube with a small section of existing foreskin. This works by lengthening and opening up the urethra at the tip of the penis. Extending the length of the urethra allows it to open. Sometimes, it is necessary for Dr Singh to place a temporary catheter into the urethra to make sure that it remains in the correct shape. If there were incisions made, they will be stitched closed and the stitches will dissolve during the healing process.
After surgery, the baby will be moved to a recovery ward where he will be monitored. The child’s penis will be taped to his belly so that it doesn’t move. Dr Singh will insert a urinary catheter to drain the urine from the bladder whilst the penis heals. The urine will flow to the diaper. Your child will be encouraged to drink lots of fluids so that he urinates because urinating will keep pressure from building up in the urethra. He will be given pain medication to relieve pain.
