OVERVIEW
If your child is born with undescended testicles, Dr Singh may recommend a surgical procedure known as orchidopexy.
Orchidopexy is a surgical treatment of an undescended testicle where the testicles are freed and implanted into the scrotum. Orchidopexy is performed to bring down the testicle to improve its function and prevent it from damaging. Bringing the testicles down will allow the urologist to feel an abnormalities in the testicle, signs of cancer. It may be that there is a hernia associated with the undescended testicles, therefore Dr Singh will fix it during orchidopexy surgery.
During the procedure, your baby will be under general anesthesia and Dr Singh will make an incision in your baby’s groin where the undescended testicles are located. He will then carefully reposition the testicles and secure them in the correct position with the use of stitches or with tiny sutures under the skin to make sure that the testicles do not pull back up and out the scrotum.
The procedure may be performed on one or both testicles, depending on the situation. The surgery takes approximately one hour and the patient is usually discharged on the same day.
After surgery, your baby will be taken to a recover ward in the hospital where he will be monitored. The incisions will then covered with a dressing and will be advised when and how to change it. Your baby will be monitored until he is awake and till his vital signs are stable. He may feel confused, fussy and abit sick but will only last until the anesthesia wears off. Dr Kiran Singh will prescribe an ointment for you to use with the dressing and will educate you on how to take care of your baby’s dressing.
